SOME COMMON CONFUSIONs - ARE THE "BIG 3" (especially hku) the BEST UNIVERSITIES?
The above excerpts from a facebook post can fully portray the perceptions of many local students in terms of university selection. Before we quickly jump to a conclusion about university selection, it may be useful to make reference to the QS university ranking 2014/2015, which says that the highest ranked local university, HKU, is placed as the 28th best university in the world. The National University of Singapore, for example, is placed as the 22nd best. Another reputable ranking, the Times Higher Education World Reputation Ranking, in its 2015 edition, HKU did not even make it into the top 50, whereas The National University of Singapore, was placed at 24th best in the world.
In the 2015 QS ranking, HKU (ranked 30th in the world) is NO longer ranked as the best university in Hong Kong. It has now been eclipsed by UST (ranked 28th in the world). see > 香港大學跌出亞洲三甲, 港大排名插水跌22位 and, 百年老校日漸傾頹.
Despite the fact that HKU is no longer the highest ranked university, it appears that HKU graduates are still preferred by employers. Moreover, it should be also noted that according to a SCMP news report, the drop was due to a change in the method of evaluation.
With regards to the ranking of CUHK, in the 2016 QS ranking, it has been eclipsed by the City University of Hong Kong, meaning that it is the only 4th best university in Hong Kong.
"Chinese University, which was 46th last year, was pushed out of the top 50 this time, coming in at 51st. However, it shares a top-50 slot with HKU for academic reputation.QS head of research Ben Sowter said the drop for the University of Hong Kong and Chinese University was due to a change in the way that citations per faculty were evaluated. There used to be a historical bias towards life sciences and medicine.
“Since CUHK and HKU both have medical schools, their results are slightly weaker than they would have been under our previous approach,” Sowter told the South China Morning Post. “The strengths of other Hong Kong institutions in engineering, technology and social sciences has been more equitably recognised.”
